One of the voice actors from the Super Mario film franchise has hinted that the next movie may not hit theaters until 2029.
The second Super Mario movie, released last month, has already become another major success for Nintendo and Illumination. While fans are now looking ahead to the third installment, it seems the wait could last several more years.
During a recent interview with ScreenRant tied to the digital launch of Super Mario Galaxy, Keegan Michael Key, the voice of Toad, revealed that the third movie could premiere in 2029.
According to the actor, the creative team wants “to get everything right” and pay close attention to every detail. He also praised directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, saying they “have a real passion” for the franchise.
Key added that the directors are “as passionate about these projects as the audience is,” which is why the team’s focus is to “get it right.” He jokingly apologized to fans for the long wait, but assured them that Super Mario Movie 3 would be “worth the wait,” adding that 2029 is “better than sometime.”
Super Mario Galaxy became available digitally on May 19, while the 4K Ultra HD and Blu ray release is scheduled for June 16, 2026. Returning cast members include Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan Michael Key. Fans will also get access to behind the scenes content for the latest movie.
