Developer Embark Studios has decided to change its approach to voice acting in the shooter Arc Raiders after criticism over the use of artificial intelligence. Some of the game’s lines have now been re-recorded with real actors.

Studio head Patrick Söderlund said that several voice lines were replaced after the game’s launch.
«We re-recorded some of the lines post-launch and made them with real voices», – he said.

The developer previously used generative AI to create part of the dialogue, which sparked debate among players. Some critics worried that the technology could replace professional voice actors.
Söderlund insists this is not the studio’s intention. According to him, most of the voice lines in the game are performed by actors, while AI is mainly used as a production tool during development.
«There is a quality difference. A real professional actor is better than AI. That's just how it is».
He added that AI helps the team test multiple dialogue options before recording them in the studio, making it easier to decide which lines should ultimately be performed by actors.
Despite experimenting with modern tools, Söderlund says the studio views AI primarily as a way to support production rather than replace human performers.
