A new law called the “Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent” in Brazil, which came into force in March 2026, has significantly affected access to popular video games.
The main reason for the restrictions is that the new law classifies paid loot boxes with random rewards as a form of gambling, which is not allowed for minors. Because Riot Games titles include built-in random purchase systems, they are now rated 18+ in Brazil.
The law also requires companies to introduce stricter chat moderation to protect children from abuse in digital environments.
The regulation affects nearly all major franchises that include paid random-reward mechanics, including EA Sports FC, Overwatch, CS2, League of Legends, and others.
Riot Games has already responded to the new law and was forced to introduce strict restrictions for players under 18. Now, when logging into a Riot Games account in Brazil, users must pass mandatory age verification. This requires providing a tax identification number (CPF), completing facial scanning, or confirming identity using a credit card or an ID document.
Recall that LEGO recently introduced the first Super Mario minifigures.
