Charlie Day, who voices Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, has said he would happily return to the role if the Luigi’s Mansion games were adapted into their own animated spin-off. The actor noted that he enjoys the spookier side of the Super Mario universe and, while he is unaware of any current plans, believes it would be a great idea he would gladly join.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to premiere on April 1 and will feature many returning cast members from the original film, including Day. It serves as a follow-up to Nintendo and Illumination’s 2023 hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. Following that success, fans have frequently pointed to Luigi’s Mansion as one of the Nintendo franchises most deserving of a film adaptation, and Day appears to agree.

Ahead of the sequel’s release, Day said he would be thrilled to take part in a spin-off capturing the atmosphere of one of the most beloved GameCube titles. In an interview with ScreenRant alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Keegan-Michael Key, who reprise their roles as Peach and Toad, he confirmed his interest in returning as Luigi. «Yeah, it'd be a lot of pressure», he said, adding, «But if they do it, I'm in».

Day also shared that he is a fan of the Luigi’s Mansion series, which includes three console entries and a Capcom-developed arcade machine released in 2015. Even before the first movie premiered, fans noticed hints of Luigi’s Mansion in The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer, particularly a scene where Luigi runs in fear from Dry Bones through a lava-filled landscape. The moment made it into the final cut, and while no ghost-catching vacuum action appeared, many viewers noted that Luigi was central to the film’s scarier moments.

The actor also offered ideas on how such a movie could work, suggesting it could include more jump scares while still remaining family-friendly: «And not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun». Key supported the idea, while Taylor-Joy jokingly added that such moments appeal Especially 3-year-olds.

There is currently no confirmation that a Luigi’s Mansion movie is in development. Day also said he has not heard anything about being involved in a future project. However, rumors about Luigi’s Mansion 4 for Nintendo Switch 2, which began circulating in summer 2025, could potentially encourage Nintendo to explore a film adaptation to boost interest in the franchise.

As a Reminder, Death Stranding 2 PC release pushes the game past 2 million copies sold and $150 million revenue.
