Destiny 2 has experienced a remarkable resurgence after the launch of its final major content update. Within the first 24 hours, the game reached a peak of 167,867 concurrent players on Steam, marking one of its strongest performances in recent years.

Ahead of the update, Bungie confirmed that it was bringing Destiny 2's era of active live-service development to a close. In response, the community organized a large-scale login event on June 9, encouraging players to return to the game and send a message to both Bungie and Sony. Fans also launched petitions and renewed calls for a potential Destiny 3.

The turnout was so significant that SteamDB, the popular platform that tracks Steam statistics, briefly struggled to handle the traffic generated by the sudden influx of players. Destiny 2 itself also experienced login issues, with users across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox reporting connection errors.

The surge in activity pushed Destiny 2 to the top of Steam’s Global Top Sellers chart. Major discounts on expansions and additional content further contributed to the game's renewed popularity.

Many players also compared the numbers to Bungie’s other live-service title, Marathon. Destiny 2 surpassed Marathon’s all-time Steam peak of 88,000 concurrent players within minutes of the community event. Even after the initial rush, Destiny 2 maintained around 60,000 active players, while Marathon hovered near 7,000.

The impressive turnout serves as another reminder of how passionate the Destiny community remains. Despite the end of the game's major development cycle, player interest in the franchise is still strong, and many fans continue to hope for the future of the series.
