Archetype Entertainment wants the side content in Exodus to be more than optional filler. Speaking to GamesRadar+, narrative director Drew Karpyshyn, known for his work on Mass Effect, explained that optional quests are designed to give players freedom to explore what truly interests them.

According to Karpyshyn, the team is deliberately avoiding content that exists purely to pad out playtime.

«We don’t want things to feel tacked on. We definitely don’t want you to feel like you’re doing it because you’re obligated», — he says, or simply because you need experience points.

The goal is for side quests to stand on their own as compelling stories.

«We want side quests to be something you would do even if you weren’t getting a reward. You’re going to get rewards of course, but we want you to feel like ‘this is something I’m interested in, this is something I want to explore», — Karpyshyn explains.

Archetype emphasizes that all optional content should be closely tied to Exodus’ central themes, its companions, and narrative ideas that may not receive full attention along the main story path. The developers believe this approach will make side quests feel like an integral part of the overall experience rather than optional distractions.
