Netflix has officially started production on its live action adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Filming is currently underway in Rome, Italy.

The series is created by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Producers also include representatives from Ubisoft Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Matt O’Toole. Claire Kiechel and Jaquén Castellanos act as co executive producers. The project is directed by Johan Renck, known for his work on the series «Chernobyl», «Breaking Bad», and «The Walking Dead».

It has also been confirmed that the administration of the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi has confirmed that filming of the Netflix adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed series is currently taking place near Camaldoli in Casentino.

«As the authority that issued one of the necessary permits, we can confirm your report, as the filming in question is currently taking place in the Camaldoli area», — the park administration stated, confirming that production is underway.

The Florentine reported rumors that the forests around Eremo di Camaldoli might serve as a filming location for the series. This information has now been officially confirmed.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise, developed by Ubisoft, is known for its rich historical settings, and Florence has played a key role in the video game series. The city’s Renaissance streets and landmarks have previously served as a backdrop for the games, making Tuscany’s forests a natural extension for the television adaptation.

The story of the series is set in Ancient Rome during the early reign of Emperor Nero. His mentor and advisor Seneca the Younger tries to restrain the young ruler’s darker impulses. Rumors of corruption, betrayal, and a mysterious hidden order begin to spread through the city. At this point, a new assassin emerges, tasked with uncovering a conspiracy linked to Nero’s rise, Seneca’s influence, and intrigues stretching from the imperial court to the city’s underbelly. The events of the series take place between 54 and 68 AD.

The confirmed cast includes Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, and Tanzyn Crawford. Wallace is reportedly set to play one of the main roles, though character details remain undisclosed.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise began in 2007 and focuses on the secret conflict between the Assassins and the Templars. Since then the series has grown to more than a dozen games, with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows released in 2025. The franchise has sold over 230 million copies worldwide and previously received a 2016 film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender.

Wiener and Patino said:

«We’ve been fans of Assassin’s Creed since its release in 2007. Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that Assassin’s Creed opens to us».

They added:

«Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour, and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance».

As a Reminder, Capcom and Paramount reveal teasers for the new Street Fighter movie.
