Former Bethesda developer Bruce Nesmith, who left the studio in 2021, has shared a skeptical view on the possibility and practicality of remastering or remaking The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind. According to Nesmith, the biggest obstacle is technical.
«The problem with doing Morrowind is that I bet they don’t have the original code. The game is so old. I don’t know if the original source code exists anymore. If it does, can you even compile it?», — he said.
He contrasted this with Oblivion, noting that its source code was still available and could be compiled and integrated into a newer engine. Nesmith also questioned whether the game itself would resonate with modern players.
«The other thing I would say is go back and play Morrowind and tell me that’s the game you want to play again. We all have these fond memories of things that were pivotal moments in our gaming fantasy histories, but you go back and play a 20-year-old game and you will cringe», — he explained.
He added that even Oblivion Remastered had moments that felt dated, though fans were willing to overlook them thanks to nostalgia. In his opinion, that issue would be even more pronounced with Morrowind.
«The reality of playing Morrowind would not stand the test of time, in my opinion», — said Nesmith, who previously served as design lead on Skyrim.
These comments are particularly noteworthy given that many fans still consider Morrowind to be Bethesda’s best game and the entry that offered the most genuine RPG freedom. However, whether Bethesda would pursue a light remaster or a full-scale remake remains an open question, as a complete overhaul would require significant time and resources. With the studio currently focused on The Elder Scrolls 6, a return to Morrowind may not be a priority anytime soon.
