In response to the planned sale of Electronic Arts to a group of investors that includes Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the gaming community is preparing an unprecedented protest action. Gamers are planning a “raid” on EA headquarters in Redwood City to condemn the $55 billion deal and demand its cancellation.
The event is being organized by The Players Alliance. The protest is scheduled for May 11 and will also be streamed live on Twitch through the channel of user SlayerKase.
According to a press release from The Players Alliance, gamers fear that the deal could increase pressure on the company, potentially leading to negative consequences for the industry such as mass layoffs, higher prices driven by more aggressive monetization strategies, and the replacement of developers with artificial intelligence technologies.
The protest will take the form of a performance event. Gamers dressed as famous video game characters will unveil a 15-meter banner containing more than 70,000 signatures collected through a petition against the sale. The action is expected to take place on the Madden football field located in the center of the EA campus.
