New details have surfaced online regarding Sony’s next generation PlayStation 6 console as well as a powerful handheld device. Both platforms are expected to become part of the PlayStation ecosystem and launch at the same time.

Well known hardware insider Kepler_L2 reports that PlayStation 6 will be equipped with 30 GB of combined system and graphics memory. According to him, Sony plans to use GDDR7 running at 32 GHz, which is double the memory capacity found in PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, both of which feature 16 GB of GDDR6. The memory configuration is said to consist of ten GDDR7 modules with 3 GB each.

Sony is also expected to reduce the memory bus width from 256 bits to 160 bits. Despite this change, the increased speed should result in a noticeable boost in bandwidth, reaching around 640 GB/s compared to the current 576 GB/s.

Meanwhile, the portable PlayStation device currently known under the codename Canis will reportedly feature 24 GB of memory. While it will rely on LPDDR5X, the amount is considered impressive for a handheld system.

This information suggests that Sony’s upcoming gaming platforms, which are expected to launch between 2028 and 2029, will represent a major technological leap and allow developers to build far more ambitious virtual worlds with fewer technical limitations.

As a reminder, Fortnite could collaborate with the co-op game PEAK soon.
