Studio Naughty Dog and Sony had originally planned to develop a remake of the first entry in the Uncharted franchise, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. However, the project was eventually shelved in favor of an updated version of The Last of Us. Details about the canceled project were revealed by dataminer Thekempy during an appearance on the Last Stand Media podcast hosted by Colin Moriarty.
According to the insider, the idea for the remake emerged in 2018 or 2019. Sony's subsidiary team, Visual Arts Support Group, which primarily serves as a support studio, was brought in to work on the project. The developers reportedly created a small test segment of the game using The Last of Us Part II engine. Due to the use of shared development tools, some technical files from this prototype ultimately remained in The Last of Us Part II's code.
The main reason for the project's cancellation was the realization that the original Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would require an extensive overhaul. The studio concluded that the game's level design and action set pieces had become too outdated by modern development standards. As a result, the developers decided to shift their focus to a title that required fewer fundamental gameplay changes, eventually leading the team to create The Last of Us remake.
As a reminder, the first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has been revealed, with the series set to premiere this fall.
