During a special broadcast, Square Enix updated sales figures for NieR: Automata and dropped a clear hint at a continuation of the story. As of February 2026, the game has sold more than ten million copies worldwide.

To mark the milestone, the publisher released a YouTube video, but its ending drew the most attention. In the final seconds, a message appears on screen stating «NieR: Automata to be continued…», sparking immediate speculation among fans. Shortly after the video went live, well known host and producer Geoff Keighley shared a screenshot of the message on X.

NieR: Automata is the sequel to the original NieR released in 2010. The series did receive a follow up in 2021 in the form of a mobile game, but that project went offline in 2024 and failed to satisfy much of the fanbase. Last November, series creator Yoko Taro addressed fan frustration, explaining that he had been working on new projects, many of which were ultimately canceled.

Yoko Taro also appears to be involved in this mysterious continuation. He shared the anniversary video on his X account, thanked players for their support, and is taking part in the game’s ninth anniversary livestream.

For now, it remains unclear what form the continuation will take. However, the statement that NieR: Automata will be «continued» strongly suggests that a spin off, a direct sequel, or even another non game project such as the 2023 anime NieR: Automata Ver1.1a could be in development.
