By comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold 1.52 million units over the year. PlayStation 5 reached sales of 879,204 units, Xbox Series X|S sold just 31,226 units, and PlayStation 4 recorded only 1,087 units, underlining the ongoing decline of Sony’s hardware presence in the region.

Nintendo also led software sales. Games for Switch and Switch 2 accounted for nine of the ten best selling physical titles in Japan. The top selling game was Mario Kart World, a launch title for Switch 2, which moved 2.66 million physical copies.

This strong performance contributed to significant growth in Japan’s overall games market, which expanded from ¥301.32 billion in 2024 to ¥418.13 billion in 2025. Most of this increase came from hardware sales. However, reports note that toward the end of the year, Switch 2’s sales pace slightly lagged behind that of the original Switch during its launch period.

Top 10 best-selling physical games in Japan:

  • Mario Kart World (Switch 2) – 2,668,381 units
