The rumored multiplayer Halo project known as Project Ekur has reportedly gone through another major change in direction. According to Rebs Gaming, the game was originally planned as an extraction shooter from Certain Affinity, but those plans have seemingly changed, with the project now becoming a large scale multiplayer shooter similar to Halo’s Big Team Battle modes.
This would not be the first time Project Ekur has changed its concept. According to the insider, the game was originally being developed as a battle royale title under the codename Tatanka. However, that version of the project was cancelled after Halo Studios decided to move development efforts to Unreal Engine 5.
Rebs Gaming claims that the first Project Ekur prototypes were reportedly completed in June 2023 and included AI controlled opponents. Following that, the team began exploring the idea of a Halo based extraction shooter.
One of the concepts reportedly involved players teaming up with AI squad members, exploring a large map, collecting resources, and fighting against other teams alongside their AI allies. However, the project eventually moved closer to something inspired by Halo 5: Guardians’ Warzone mode rather than a traditional extraction shooter.
Halo Studios has not officially confirmed the development of Project Ekur yet, but a separate PvP focused title would make sense, especially since the next major entry in the franchise, Halo: Campaign Evolved, will focus only on campaign and co op gameplay without competitive multiplayer modes.
Halo: Campaign Evolved executive producer Damon Conn and creative director Max Szlagor previously said that Halo Studios wants to honor the entire franchise while introducing it to a new generation of players.
«We hope to bring along the series veterans who have been with us for the past 25 years and have them play with an entirely new generation», «There are people who have never been exposed to Halo. Maybe they’ve always been on Sony products, switched consoles at a certain point, or just missed it at the time. We want to bring players back together», — said Conn.
