«Spider Man: Brand New Day» continues to dominate the global box office. The Sony and Marvel blockbuster earned another $39 million during its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $855 million and its worldwide gross to $2.22 billion.
Those numbers have pushed the film into third place among the highest grossing movies in history worldwide. Only 2009’s «Avatar» with $2.9 billion and «Avengers: Endgame» with around $2.7 billion remain ahead. «Brand New Day» has already surpassed «Avatar: The Way of Water», which earned roughly $2.3 billion worldwide.
The movie is performing just as strongly in North America. «Spider Man: Brand New Day» has become only the fourth film ever to cross $800 million domestically. It currently ranks third on the all time domestic box office chart, behind «Avengers: Endgame» with $858 million and «Star Wars: The Force Awakens» with $936 million.
If its current momentum continues, the latest Spider Man movie could overtake «The Force Awakens» and become the highest grossing film in North American box office history. It could even become the first movie to surpass $1 billion in the domestic market.
«Spider Man: Brand New Day» has remained No. 1 at the box office for four consecutive weekends. «Insidious: Out of the Further» opened in second place with $25.3 million from North American theaters. The horror sequel added another $35 million internationally, bringing its worldwide opening to $60 million.
Christopher Nolan’s «The Odyssey» took third place with $19.5 million in its sixth weekend. The blockbuster has now earned $539 million in North America and $1.44 billion worldwide.
The summer movie season is also coming to an end on a strong note. It has already become the highest grossing summer box office season since the COVID 19 pandemic disrupted the industry in 2020. Now theaters are counting on upcoming fall releases, including Tom Cruise’s «Digger», «Practical Magic 2», a new «Resident Evil» reboot and the «Verity» adaptation.
«There are a lot of cool and original ideas for the fall, which is what everyone wants to see,» said Chris Randleman of Flix Brewhouse. He added that exhibitors are comparing the upcoming season with last fall rather than the much stronger summer period. «Even if it’s a low bar, we are definitely going to exceed last year».
