Many players may have already forgotten about the fan made remaster of the cult action RPG Dark Messiah of Might and Magic released in 2006. The game became famous not only for its spectacular and complex combat system but also for its memorable gameplay moments, such as pushing enemies into abysses or kicking orcs onto metal spikes.

The enthusiast team wiltOS Technologies has now reminded fans about the project and shared good news. Players will not need to download the updated version from third party services or use complicated tools. The developers managed to reach agreements with Ubisoft and Valve.

The team announced that in 2026 the remaster titled Dark Messiah: Community Edition will officially appear on Steam, and the store page for the project should become available soon. At the moment the developers are porting the game to the latest version of the Source Engine and testing graphical mods to ensure the game looks significantly better while preserving the original visual style.

Development of Dark Messiah: Community Edition became possible thanks to modern modding tools, primarily RTX Remix from NVIDIA.

Using RTX Remix, wiltOS Technologies significantly improved textures, added depth to surfaces such as cobblestones and brick walls, implemented ray tracing, enhanced shadow quality, and introduced support for image upscaling technologies DLSS 3.5 and Ray Reconstruction. The team also added cooperative gameplay and expanded modding capabilities.

A specially trained neural network scans the in game environment and generates enhanced models with ray tracing support, although a large portion of the work is still done manually.

Thanks to modern technologies based on artificial intelligence and frame generation, the nearly 20 year old game now looks impressive and can compete visually with many modern titles.

However, remasters created with RTX Remix usually have high system requirements. Because of that, despite its age, the updated Dark Messiah of Might and Magic may not run smoothly on every PC.

As a Reminder, Filming of Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series has begun in Italy.
