Epic Games may have moved on from the Unreal series long ago, but it hasn’t completely abandoned its classic shooters. In recent years, the company has allowed Internet Archive to host its older titles, making Unreal Gold and the original Unreal Tournament available for download.
Thanks to the efforts of the OldUnreal community and official approval from Epic, Unreal Tournament 2004 can now be downloaded completely free of charge.
The new patch (v3808) is the first official update for the game in two decades. The OldUnreal community didn’t just re-release the game — they also adapted it for modern operating systems (Windows 10/11, Linux, and macOS).
The patch includes a new renderer, an updated SDL backend for Linux/macOS, and code migrated to modern build systems. Numerous bugs have been fixed, although the developers warn that new ones may have appeared due to the масштабні changes.
Since OldUnreal does not have the right to host the game directly, they created a special installer. It automatically downloads the original disc image from Internet Archive, after which users need to install the community patch from GitHub.
UT2004 is considered the peak of the series. It combined the graphics of UT2003 with a huge number of modes, including the legendary Onslaught (with vehicles) and Assault (objective-based missions).
As a reminder, the next generation of PlayStation may be delayed by two years.
