Xbox has begun testing free ad-supported cloud gaming among Xbox Insider program members. Development of the free cloud service first became known back in 2025, followed later by internal testing, with the company planning a full public release in 2026.

As part of the test period, Xbox Insiders gained the ability to stream games they already own. Watching ad blocks is mandatory only for free access, whereas subscribers of paid Game Pass tiers are exempt from ads.

Key conditions of the service:

• Ad format: Ad clips play before the game starts (during previous internal testing, the ad block lasted 2 minutes).
• Session length: Each gaming session is limited to one hour.
• Last-gen availability: Xbox One owners can run newer games built for Xbox Series X|S without needing to purchase a new console.

The developers also formulated five key principles guiding the implementation of ads into their services:

• Player focus: Ads should create additional value for the user.
• Maintaining flow: Ad clips do not interrupt active gameplay.
• Quality standards: Ad materials are held to the same high quality bar as core content.
• Transparency: The service clearly labels ad integrations.
• Platform context: Ads fit what players expect on each specific platform.
