There are many different creatures inhabiting the ocean of Proteus in Subnautica 2, but the most dangerous among them are the Leviathans. These gigantic creatures are the apex predators of the game and will pose the greatest threat to you while exploring the underwater world.
At the same time, you need to understand where all the Leviathans are located if you want to see them with your own eyes. This information will also allow you to plan your route in a way that helps you avoid the greatest danger in the game. Therefore, we have gathered all the important information about Leviathans in this guide.
Subnautica 2 is currently in Early Access, so only four Leviathans are available in the game right now — Collector, Shiver, Great Jaw, and Deepwing Brooder. Three of them are extremely dangerous, while one poses no threat to players, allowing you to approach it safely.
The most famous Leviathan in the game is the Collector, which resembles a gigantic squid. It is encountered by the largest number of players because it is located near several story objectives on the map.
You are most likely to encounter the Collector in the trenches located between major areas east of the starting escape pod. More specifically, these are the trenches surrounding the Alien Ruins, and according to the story, you will need to visit this part of the map multiple times.
When the Collector starts approaching you, the game's audio will change, serving as a signal that it is better to turn around and move in the opposite direction as quickly as possible. If you encounter this Leviathan while inside the Tadpole, it will immediately swallow you whole. If you fail to avoid an encounter with the Collector, quickly exit your vehicle, as this gives you a good chance of escaping while the Tadpole takes the damage.
The Camouflage biomodule is also essential for successfully escaping this Leviathan. In addition, several speed upgrades, the Tadpole, and the Repair Tool will come in handy.

You may avoid encounters with other Leviathans, but you will still have to find the most dangerous one. The reason is the Sonic Echo biomodule, which allows you to gather resources more efficiently. Once activated, it emits a sonar pulse that highlights copper, titanium, and other materials around you, reducing the time needed to search for resources.
To unlock Sonic Echo, you need to scan the Collector, which may take several attempts. The best approach is to move toward it from above.
Now let's move on to the Shiver, which has become popular among Subnautica 2 fans thanks to its appearance. This Leviathan has a prehistoric look, featuring wings, a massive beak, and teeth the size of your Tadpole.
However, you are unlikely to encounter the Shiver by accident right now unless you deliberately go looking for it. This Leviathan can be found west of the starting escape pod, beyond the currently accessible part of the map.
To encounter the Shiver Leviathan, simply head toward the giant tree protruding from the water. After roughly 350 meters, you will receive a message stating that this part of the map is still under development and that you should proceed with caution. If you continue moving after receiving the warning, you will quickly encounter three or four Shivers, which will immediately attack and swallow both you and your Tadpole.

An encounter with the Great Jaw can catch you off guard, especially if you are not paying attention or do not know what it looks like. It does not move, and its greatest danger lies in its shell-like appearance, as during your first encounter it may seem like nothing more than a stationary object.
The Great Jaw can be found by traveling approximately 325 meters south of the starting escape pod. Then you need to dive to a depth of around 60 meters, where you will encounter the shell. You can enter the shell and search for loot inside, but you will need the Sonar Resonator.
While inside the shell, avoid the pink tentacles. If you damage even one of them, the Great Jaw will begin closing its shell. You will have a short amount of time to escape, but if it closes before you get out, you will die instantly. Of course, there is a chance to quickly cut the tentacles, which may prevent the Great Jaw from noticing you, but this happens very rarely. Therefore, be extremely careful.

This Leviathan remains a mystery to players, as many may not even know it exists or realize that it is actually a Leviathan. This is because the Deepwing Brooder can appear in any location across the ocean, while remaining completely peaceful toward players. It is not explicitly marked as a Leviathan, likely because it poses no threat, but considering its size, it definitely belongs in that category.
The chance of encountering a Deepwing Brooder is very low, which means that most players may never see one. It is possible that the developers will expand its role in the game in the future, causing it to appear more frequently or giving it some kind of story significance.

Leviathans are dangerous in Subnautica 2, so the game provides warnings when you are getting close to one. A change in the music is the most reliable indicator that a Leviathan is nearby. As soon as you enter an area inhabited by a Leviathan, the soundtrack immediately shifts to a more ominous tone. If this happens, it is best to change your direction, as danger is already close. Predators also emit low-frequency sounds and roars that can be heard from a great distance.
Although the first Subnautica did not feature firearms, it included tools that allowed players to kill predators. With the release of Subnautica 2, the developers at Unknown Worlds stated that they do not want to encourage violence in the game, which is why players currently have no ability to kill aggressive creatures. Instead, the focus has been placed on tools that help distract or avoid predators without harming them.
We hope this guide has helped you better understand the Leviathans of Subnautica 2 and will allow you to avoid danger when encountering them.
