Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has announced a major story expansion for The Alters, one of the most creative and unconventional games of 2025, blending survival mechanics, strategy elements, and action-driven gameplay.
The DLC, titled Last Variable, will focus on the Scientist, one of Jan Dolski’s alternate versions. In the original game, the Scientist can ask the player to leave him behind on the mysterious planet at the end of his personal storyline. That outcome appears to serve as the foundation for the expansion’s narrative..
According to the developers, Last Variable will offer more than 20 hours of gameplay. However, that estimate may be somewhat optimistic, considering the base game itself takes roughly the same amount of time to complete.
The story takes place 20 years after Jan Dolski departs the unnamed planet. During that time, the world where the Scientist remained seems to have transformed into a much more habitable place.
Last Variable launches on July 13 for PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, as well as for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
