8 Years of the NEXT Update: How No Man's Sky Pulled Off the Biggest Comeback in Video Game History

On July 24, 2018, studio Hello Games released the free NEXT update (version 1.5) for No Man's Sky, coinciding with the game's release on the Xbox One console. It was this patch that became the turning point, fundamentally altering the fate of the space sandbox after its controversial launch and turning the project into one of the most successful examples of reputation recovery in gaming history.

Due to the absence of many promised features—particularly multiplayer mode—the game received mostly negative reviews at launch. Hello Games did not abandon the project and released several major free updates over the following two years (Foundation, Path Finder, Atlas Rises); however, it was the release of NEXT that triggered a dramatic surge in interest, attracted a new audience, and brought back players who had purchased the game at launch.

The update became the most massive up to that point and reworked core elements of the game:

  • Full multiplayer: players gained the ability to explore the galaxy together with friends.
  • Third-person perspective: support for a new view both during planetary exploration and in flight.
  • Updated world generation: completely revamped landscapes, textures, water, clouds, and space objects.
  • Expanded base building: the ability to construct bases virtually anywhere.
  • Fleets and improved graphics: added frigate fleets, updated freighters, improved animations, and character models.

Since 2018, Hello Games has continued to regularly release major updates at no additional cost to game owners—including Beyond, Origins, Frontiers, Echoes, Worlds Part I, and others. The developers have no plans to stop supporting No Man's Sky, while the fan community eagerly awaits new global updates, particularly for the game's upcoming 10th anniversary.
