New details have emerged about the future of StarCraft. Previous reports claimed that Korean publisher Nexon had secured rights to develop a shooter based on the iconic strategy franchise, with its announcement potentially coming next week at BlizzCon 2026 on September 12 and 13.

However, a new report suggests Blizzard may be considering a much bigger deal. Instead of simply licensing the franchise, the company could reportedly sell the StarCraft intellectual property to Nexon. The information comes from South Korean outlet The Chosun Daily.

Nexon seeks to acquire the intellectual property rights to StarCraft from the US company Blizzard. Despite nearly 30 years having passed since the original game's release, StarCraft remains one of the ten most popular PC games in Korea.

According to a senior industry source cited by the publication, the deal between Nexon and Blizzard is already close to being finalized.

«As far as I understand, after signing this contract, Nexon will obtain the rights to develop a StarCraft sequel».

Since StarCraft II already exists, the report suggests that this could ultimately lead to Nexon developing StarCraft III.

Neither Blizzard nor Nexon has officially confirmed the report so far. If true, however, the potential transfer of StarCraft to Nexon would likely be a controversial development among longtime fans, particularly given the publisher’s reputation.

As a Reminder, Four New Games Are Now Available to PlayStation Plus Subscribers in September.
