Bungie is reportedly preparing for a significant wave of layoffs. According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, the cuts are planned to take place shortly after the release of the final major update for Destiny 2, which is scheduled for June 9.
The main reason behind the layoffs is the lack of new projects for the team that has continued supporting Destiny 2. At the moment, Bungie’s management reportedly has no plans to immediately begin full production of a third installment in the franchise.
Employees have been pitching ideas for future games, including projects set in the Destiny universe, but none of them have received approval from studio leadership so far.
Instead of continuing to expand the Destiny series, Bungie has chosen to redirect resources and assign part of its development staff to work on Marathon. Despite the game failing to meet the company’s initial financial expectations since its launch, management still hopes to grow its audience over time.
Earlier, Grand Theft Auto VI was officially confirmed for release in November 2026.
