Infinity Ward unveiled the first gameplay footage of the revamped DMZ mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 during Xbox Games Showcase 2026. While the studio is still keeping details about the campaign under wraps, it is already highlighting new gameplay experiences that will accompany the upcoming shooter.
Over the years, Call of Duty has repeatedly embraced popular trends within the FPS genre. After experimenting with battle royale through Blackout and later achieving major success with Warzone, the franchise also entered the extraction shooter space with DMZ in Modern Warfare 2. Since then, the mode had remained dormant until now.
The five-minute gameplay trailer showcased many familiar extraction mechanics. A squad of operators enters a dangerous exclusion zone, engages in intense firefights, loots defeated enemies, revives teammates, and races to extract before it's too late. Infinity Ward confirmed that the new version of DMZ will launch alongside the base game on October 23, 2026.
According to the developers, the mode takes place after the events of the campaign inside the Hajin Exclusion Zone, described as a dynamic and living combat environment. The team says it used feedback from the original 2022 DMZ Beta to redesign the experience, adding full story missions, side operations, and free-roam exploration.
Enemy AI has also been significantly upgraded, while the main FOB progression system has been reworked to deliver the kind of long-term progression players expect from a modern extraction shooter.
Initial reactions from the community have been largely positive. Many players praised the gunplay and the expanded feature set, viewing the new DMZ as a major improvement over its predecessor. However, the mode will enter a competitive market dominated by established titles such as Arc Raiders and Escape From Tarkov.
Although previous Call of Duty side projects have not always achieved the same level of success as Warzone, the franchise's popularity and the strong reception to Modern Warfare 4 could help DMZ establish a lasting place within the extraction shooter genre.
