The European Union is reportedly preparing to officially approve the acquisition of Electronic Arts by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The decision is expected by the end of July, bringing the nearly year long approval process close to its conclusion.
According to reports, the European Commission is set to complete its review under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation on July 22, with the transaction expected to close on July 30.
Once finalized, the acquisition will become the second largest deal in gaming history, surpassed only by Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard.

The proposed takeover has faced political scrutiny, with members of the US Democratic Party previously urging the Federal Trade Commission to examine the transaction.
EA officially confirmed the sale in September 2025. The buyer is a consortium consisting of Silver Lake, Affinity Partners, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Following the acquisition, CEO Andrew Wilson will remain in his position, while the company's headquarters will continue to operate from California.
Commenting on the deal, Wilson described the acquisition as "recognition" of EA's success in creating long lasting and popular gaming franchises.
It remains unclear what impact the completed acquisition will have on the company. Earlier reports indicated that EA would retain creative control over its studios despite the Public Investment Fund acquiring more than 90% of the business. In May, protesters also gathered outside EA's headquarters in an attempt to deliver a petition opposing the buyout.
