One of the world's oldest esports organizations, the American-based Evil Geniuses (EG), has announced that it will cease operations. Starting November 2, 2026, the club will withdraw from professional competitions and end its day-to-day operations. The decision comes amid financial difficulties, limited sponsorship opportunities, and the rising costs of maintaining teams at the highest competitive level.
The organization released its official statement on October 20. In it, Evil Geniuses' management explained that it had spent the past several years attempting to restructure the club's business model, stabilize operations, and rebuild trust within the community.
Despite these efforts, investments, and expansion into new esports titles, management ultimately concluded that continuing operations under current market conditions was no longer financially viable.

The organization cited several challenges that have affected the esports industry in recent years as the main reasons behind its decision to shut down.
These include limited sponsorship opportunities, the increasing costs of competing at the professional level, and the constant investment required to keep teams competitive.
Evil Geniuses stated that it had managed to stabilize internal operations, improve the brand's reputation among fans, expand content production, and bring in new content creators over the past few years.
However, even these improvements were not enough to establish a sustainable financial model that would allow the organization to continue operating.
Evil Geniuses announced that the shutdown process would take place gradually, with all affected players, coaches, and employees involved in the transition.
Members of all competitive rosters have already been given permission to negotiate with other organizations.
Meanwhile, players and coaches from the VALORANT division will officially be allowed to sign contracts with new teams after the season concludes on November 2, 2026.
The organization therefore intends to fulfill its remaining obligations to players, coaches, and staff before permanently ending its operations.
Evil Geniuses was founded in 1999 and eventually became one of the most recognizable brands in North American esports.
Throughout its history, the organization competed across numerous titles, including Counter-Strike, Dota 2, League of Legends, VALORANT, Call of Duty, StarCraft II, Halo, and others.
One of the organization's greatest achievements came at The International 2015 in Dota 2. The Evil Geniuses roster, featuring Peter "ppd" Dager, Syed Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan, Clinton "Fear" Loomis, Ludwig "zai" Wåhlberg, and Saahil "UNiVeRsE" Arora, claimed the tournament's championship trophy and more than $6.6 million in prize money.
In 2018, Evil Geniuses became world champions in Call of Duty: WWII. The following year, its Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster won ESL One New York 2019.
Another defining moment in the club's history came in 2023, when Evil Geniuses' VALORANT team pulled off a remarkable victory at VALORANT Champions, defeating Paper Rex in the grand final. The triumph became one of the organization's most significant international achievements in recent years.
According to the club's official website, Evil Geniuses has won more than 200 trophies across various esports disciplines throughout its history.
The closure of Evil Geniuses marks a significant moment for the global esports industry. The organization spent 27 years in competitive gaming, witnessed multiple generations of professional players, and contributed to the development of numerous esports disciplines.
At the same time, its decision highlights how difficult achieving financial sustainability remains, even for organizations with decades of history, international championships, and globally recognized brands.
On November 2, 2026, Evil Geniuses will bring its operations to an end, leaving behind dozens of legendary rosters, hundreds of trophies, and a lasting legacy in the history of professional esports.
