Developer Wube Software has announced preparations for the release of Factorio Update 2.1, which will serve as the final major content update for the factory-building simulation, marking the end of the game's active development phase.
Factorio first entered Steam Early Access in February 2016, before officially launching in August 2020. The title became a major success for Wube Software and is widely credited with helping establish and popularize the factory automation genre on PC.
The developers have urged players to keep their expectations realistic regarding the scale of the upcoming patch. According to the studio, it is fully satisfied with the current design, balance, and progression systems of both the base game and the Space Age expansion. As a result, Version 2.1 will not introduce sweeping gameplay changes or large amounts of new content.
Over the coming weeks, Wube Software will conduct a closed beta test, followed by the release of an experimental Version 2.1 build in late June. A standard bug-fix update is scheduled for July before the team begins its summer vacation period.
The developers also plan to keep Version 2.1 in an experimental state throughout the summer, giving mod creators ample time to update their projects and ensure compatibility with the new version.
The launch of Update 2.1 will officially conclude Factorio’s active gameplay development cycle. In the long term, Wube Software intends to focus exclusively on technical support for the game. Future efforts will be directed toward bug fixes, platform compatibility, performance improvements, and continued support for the modding ecosystem.
At the same time, the studio has confirmed that work has already begun on new projects beyond Factorio.
As previously reported, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will abandon wacky cosmetic skins in favor of a more serious and immersive atmosphere.
