Fallout 76 will stop expanding its map in future updates

Bethesda Game Studios is planning to rethink how Fallout 76 evolves and no longer intends to keep expanding the game’s map. Starting in 2026, the developers want to focus less on adding new regions and more on enriching existing locations with fresh content.

Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush explained that endlessly increasing the size of the world is not feasible due to technical limitations. Instead, the team aims to make the game world feel “thicker” by introducing new systems and deeper ways to interact with content that is already there.

«We can’t just continue making the map bigger and bigger», — Rush said, referring to the constraints the studio faces.

He also added that the development focus will shift away from the edges of the map and toward improving familiar areas.

A similar approach has already shown positive results. Rush recalled the changes to the C.A.M.P. building system, which allowed players to create larger and more creative settlements. According to him, these updates enable people to engage with the world in more ways than before, and their impact on the community has been significant.

Although new large areas may not appear in the coming years, Bethesda promises to fill Fallout 76’s familiar locations with new features and activities.

As reminder, The Last of Us may end with season three as HBO chief hints at no further plans.
