Square Enix has unveiled a new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation during Gamescom Opening Night Live, giving players a closer look at some of the most challenging battles coming to the final chapter of the remake trilogy.
Game director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage to discuss the game's climactic conclusion. The trailer focused on the Weapons, some of the most formidable optional bosses from the original Final Fantasy 7. Rufus Shinra describes them as "towering monstrosities termed weapons."
The footage features Cloud and his allies battling Emerald, Ruby, and Ultima Weapon. These encounters will rank among the hardest challenges in Revelation and will retain unique restrictions inspired by the original game. For example, the Emerald Weapon battle can have a 20-minute time limit if players do not equip a specific Materia. It remains to be seen how these distinctive mechanics will be adapted to Revelation's real-time combat system.
Square Enix officially revealed the name of the third game in the remake trilogy during Summer Game Fest earlier this year. Revelation will serve as the conclusion to the story that began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020.
One of the game's major additions will be the Highwind airship, which players will be able to pilot across the open world. They can also jump from the airship and parachute directly to the ground without a loading transition. Familiar locations from Remake and Rebirth will return alongside new areas, including Wutai.
Hamaguchi has also assured fans that Revelation will not suffer from the same level of content bloat as Rebirth. According to Vincent Valentine's voice actor Matt Mercer, the trilogy's combat system has been "perfected". Vincent and Cid will finally join the party as playable characters.
The Gold Saucer is returning as well and will serve as another hub for Queen's Blood activities. Players can also expect the most demanding encounters in the entire trilogy, including battles against the deadly Weapons.
As for the ending, Hamaguchi has confirmed that the development team did not alter its plans in response to player feedback. The developers had a clear vision for the trilogy from the beginning and have continued to follow it. Since the remake series has already taken liberties with the original game's events, fans remain curious about what twists Revelation will introduce and whether Cloud and his companions can ultimately change their fate.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch in spring 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
