Former Blizzard Entertainment senior software engineer Nick Bryson is working on a complete VR port of Fallout: New Vegas. The project, called OpenNV, is based on the open source OpenMW engine, which has already been used to bring Morrowind into virtual reality.

Bryson spent five years at Blizzard and worked on World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, Diablo 4, and Hearthstone. After leaving the company in 2024, he turned his attention to modding and began developing OpenNV.

The goal is not to create a simplified version of New Vegas, but to recreate the original game as accurately as possible while adding full VR functionality.

«I want to try to get the originals back exactly, and then we mod them further, right? I hope people can get the vanilla experience out of it, so they can see really, "Okay, wow, this was just a conversion"», — Bryson said.

The developer is already working on hands, finger tracking, physics, and interactive objects. He also plans to add a functional touchscreen Pip Boy, the VATS system, and a complete terminal hacking minigame.

«The first thing I did was like, hey, I wanted hands and a Pip-Boy. I started with that. I was like, "Let me see if I can articulate fingers", and I was able to», — Bryson explained.

OpenNV could eventually support other Bethesda games as well. Bryson has already experimented with Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 assets, and even managed to render some Starfield elements.

The project is still in development, with Bryson continuing to work on OpenNV as an open source passion project. His ultimate goal is to make Fallout: New Vegas playable from start to finish in VR while preserving the original experience.

As a Reminder, Terraria receives the final Bigger and Boulder patch.
