Director David Leitch has shared new updates on the Gears of War film adaptation. Speaking to Collider at CinemaCon, he essentially confirmed that the project, now handled by Netflix, is actively progressing.

«We have a great draft that's currently being refined and it's in really great shape. The studio is more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition team is also excited. They have a new game coming out this year, so everything is lining up for the movie to happen», — Leitch said.

According to him, developer The Coalition is closely involved in the production. Earlier, producer Kelly McCormick mentioned that Leitch is eager to make his first war movie, though it is not expected to release in 2026.

The latest script was written by Jon Spaihts, known for Prometheus, Doctor Strange, Passengers, and the Dune movies.

The idea of a Gears of War movie dates back to 2007 when New Line Cinema first acquired the rights, followed by Universal Pictures in 2016, but neither attempt materialized. In 2022, Netflix secured the rights from Microsoft and announced plans for both a feature film and an adult animated series.

The project remains in development, and while momentum is building, there are still no guarantees it will ultimately be completed.

As a Reminder, BAFTA Games Awards 2026 ceremony held: triumph of Clair Obscur and Dispatch.
