According to data compiled by Game File from financial reports released by Sony, sales of PlayStation first-party games had been declining every year since 2020. The company sold 58.4 million copies of its own games that year, followed by 43.9 million in 2021, 43.5 million in 2022, 39.7 million in 2023, and just 28.9 million in 2024.

Sony’s latest financial results show the first improvement in half a decade. Between April 2025 and March 2026, the company sold 32.1 million first-party games across PS4 and PS5, marking the first year-over-year increase since the start of the decline.

One of the biggest contributors to that recovery was the release of Ghost of Yotei, which served as Sony’s flagship first-party title during the reporting period.

While analysts note that 2020 was an exceptional year due to the surge in gaming demand caused by global lockdowns, Sony’s first-party sales continued to trend downward long after the pandemic boom ended. Interestingly, overall software sales on PlayStation platforms did not fall at the same pace, suggesting that the company has struggled to produce as many major first-party hits as it did during previous years.
