Digital storefront GOG has announced a collaboration with Big Box Collection, a project that has spent the past decade 3D scanning classic video game boxes.
As part of the initiative, customers who purchase selected games can download a ZIP archive containing everything needed to print, cut, and fold their own classic big box. This gives players a chance to recreate the iconic packaging themselves and bring a piece of old school PC gaming back to their shelves.
The initiative currently supports the original Hitman: Codename 47, Armikrog, Descent, Myst, and Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. More games are expected to be added in the future.
Big boxes were a defining part of PC gaming during the 1990s. They were notoriously impractical because of their size and often contained little more than a standard CD jewel case and an instruction manual. However, their large, high quality artwork made them memorable collectibles and even allowed them to double as posters.
GOG says the initiative gives players an opportunity not only to recreate the nostalgia of classic PC gaming, but also to take part in preserving its history.
