This year marks the 10th anniversary of the popular Overwatch franchise. Since its release in 2016, the game has undergone a major evolution, reshaping the concept of team-based shooters and significantly influencing the gaming industry.
According to former game director Jeffrey Kaplan, the development of Overwatch was heavily influenced by the Team Fortress series. However, instead of creating a limited set of generic classes, the developers decided to build a broad roster system of unique characters, which completely shifted the game's original concept.

The main goal for the designers was to make every individual hero feel like the "main character of their own video game". This is why each of the current 52 heroes features a unique kit of abilities, passives, and ultimate abilities (ultimates) that require hundreds of hours to fully master.

One of Overwatch's primary achievements was its accessibility for players of various skill levels. Alongside characters that require precise aiming, the game offers heroes with a much lower barrier to entry.
Transitioning to a free-to-play model in October 2022 with the release of Overwatch 2 served as an additional step toward reaching a mainstream audience. This eliminated financial barriers and made the game highly accessible for friends to enjoy together.
Overwatch is built on synergy and a clear division of roles, ranging from tanks and damage-dealing heroes to support. To enhance the gameplay experience, the developers introduced the Role Queue system in 2019 and optimized respawn times to encourage players to group up and act cohesively rather than trickling in alone.
Legendary combinations, such as Zarya's Graviton Surge paired with Hanzo's Dragonstrike, or Ana's Nano Boost on Genji, have become classics of team-based gameplay. Modern mechanics, such as tethering teammates into the air using Jetpack Cat, make these synergies even more dynamic.

Blizzard's meticulous work on character lore, animated shorts (such as the iconic "Dragons" cinematic featuring the Shimada brothers), and seasonal events helped players build a deep emotional connection with the game's universe.
Today, the concepts popularized by Overwatch—from unique characters with their own backstories to a heavy emphasis on ability synergy—can be seen in many modern hits, including Apex Legends and Marvel Rivals.
