During the presentation, Gates appeared on screen wearing a trench coat and carrying a double-barreled shotgun while standing in front of Doom-themed scenery. He used the opportunity to promote Windows 95 as the ultimate gaming platform, highlighting the advantages of DirectX, which was designed to replace the aging DOS-based tools developers had relied on for years.
The performance generated significant attention at the time and was even referenced in David Kushner's book Masters of Doom. For decades, the event survived only through written descriptions and stories from attendees, but a recording of the legendary presentation has now surfaced online.
