The gaming community was recently shaken by reports that Electronic Arts had shut down legendary Canadian studio BioWare and cancelled the next Mass Effect game, which was first announced in 2020.
The news has naturally raised concerns among fans about the future of the Mass Effect television adaptation being developed by Amazon MGM Studios. With EA apparently no longer moving forward with the game franchise, some wondered whether the TV project might also be in jeopardy. Neither Amazon nor Electronic Arts has issued an official statement so far, but IGN reports that the series remains in development and is not being cancelled.
The Mass Effect video game franchise may have come to an end with the shocking closure of BioWare, but its future on the small screen is still possible. Sources inside Prime Video have confirmed to IGN that the Mass Effect series is still being developed at Amazon MGM Studios. Our informant also added that all members of the creative team involved in the project remain on board.
The series was last discussed publicly by BioWare producer Michael Gamble on November 7, 2025, during N7 Day. At the time, he explained that the adaptation would tell a new story that does not revolve around Commander Shepard. The original plans also called for the show to have some narrative connection to the next Mass Effect game. Following the reported cancellation of that game, however, those plans may no longer be possible.
Production on the Mass Effect series is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Daniel Casey, whose credits include Fast & Furious 9 and 10 Cloverfield Lane, will serve as the project's writer and executive producer.
The production team will also include Avi Arad, known for his work on Iron Man and The Punisher, Karim Zreik, whose credits include Spider-Man: No Way Home and Borderlands, and Michael Gamble, the game director of the next Mass Effect installment. Doug Jung, co-creator of the crime thriller Mindhunter and the action series Banshee, will serve as showrunner.
As a Reminder, 32 Partnered Teams Announced for VCT 2027.
