Tournament operator StarLadder has relocated the CS2 event StarSeries Fall 2026 from the Finnish city of Vaasa. According to Ilta-Sanomat (IS), the breakdown of long-standing negotiations was caused by concerns from local authorities regarding the potential participation of Russian esports players.
The tournament was originally scheduled to take place at the Vaasan Sähkö Arena with a $500,000 prize pool and was intended to feature eight teams.
The overall budget for the event was estimated at €1–2 million. Most of the funding had already been secured in advance, while the city’s planned contribution was expected to be a relatively small five-figure amount.
A key turning point in the negotiations occurred in April, when Vaasa authorities received information from a third party about the possible participation of Russian players. Despite existing entry restrictions for Russian citizens in Finland following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the VRS (Valve Regional Standings) system prohibits discrimination based on nationality. Since several top-ranked Counter-Strike players are Russian, their participation was considered highly likely.
After learning this, the city withdrew all financial support and later отказed even symbolic partnership involvement.
Organizers from StarLadder attempted to secure fully private funding and attract sponsors. One potential deal came close to completion, but repeated deadline extensions meant the arena booking expired before a final agreement could be reached.
As a result, StarSeries Fall 2026 will be moved to Barcelona, Spain. Instead of a large arena, the tournament will now be held in a smaller studio format, while the prize pool and number of participating teams will remain unchanged.
Vaasa mayor Tomas Hjeru confirmed that spring negotiations took place but declined to provide further details due to their confidential nature.
As a reminder, esports player Bin was recently fined $22,000 for refusing to shake fans’ hands after a match.
