A large collection of footage from Avalanche Studios’ cancelled Iron Man game has unexpectedly surfaced online. The project was reportedly in development around 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but Disney and Marvel ultimately shut it down before it was ever officially announced.
Eight videos have now appeared online, offering nearly 100 minutes of gameplay in total. The footage reportedly comes from a build running on a PlayStation 3 development kit and was initially shared on Reddit’s GamingLeaksAndRumours community.
Despite being clearly unfinished, the footage provides a surprisingly detailed look at the project. The game was designed as an open world experience, with character movement and overall pacing that bear noticeable similarities to Avalanche’s Just Cause series.
The leaked gameplay also includes several flying sequences featuring Iron Man, along with hand to hand combat. The fighting appears somewhat similar to Iron Man’s combat in Marvel’s Avengers, while its rhythmic flow seems to draw inspiration from the Batman Arkham series.
One of the more notable videos appears to show an E3 demonstration build. Unlike the rougher development footage, this segment focuses on more carefully staged gameplay sequences intended to highlight the project’s main features.
The existence of Avalanche’s cancelled Iron Man game only became known publicly in 2022 following an interview with former studio head Christofer Sundberg. He explained that Disney decided to shorten the development schedule by one year. Avalanche would have needed to significantly expand its team to meet the new deadline, which Sundberg said "would have broken the studio completely".
The leaked footage serves as another reminder that Iron Man has plenty of potential as the star of a fast paced action game. EA Motive may eventually get the chance to prove it, as the studio has been working on its own single player Iron Man project for several years.
