Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the sequel to the Mortal Kombat film adaptation. The footage puts a strong focus on Johnny Cage portrayed by Karl Urban known for The Boys. At the same time Cole Young the main character of the 2021 film played by Lewis Tan is barely featured in the new promotional material.
The filmmakers at New Line Cinema are betting on scale and spectacle. Alongside familiar faces the movie introduces Kitana Baraka and the sinister Quan Chi. Fans have also taken notice of Sub-Zero’s transformation as he now appears as the dark specter Noob Saibot.
The trailer sets up the story and showcases spectacular fight scenes involving characters well known to fans of the game series.
Director Simon McQuoid says the sequel preserves the tone of the first installment while delivering far more fights locations and characters. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater adds that the story will go beyond simple arena combat.
«Even between fights the heroes will go on their own missions», – he emphasizes, promising not just action but a complete dramatic narrative filled with memorable fatalities.
Mortal Kombat 2 is set to premiere on May 8 2026 and the studio has already confirmed that a third entry in the franchise is in active development.
