Night School Studio has released its interactive horror game Unhinged on Netflix, created with involvement from directors David Fincher and Zach Cregger.
To play, users need to find the game on Netflix through a TV or computer and scan a QR code with their smartphone. The phone works as the controller, allowing players to use a flashlight, make calls, send messages, and make story decisions.
Players take the role of Ava, voiced by Zoë Kravitz, who wakes up after a storm causes a blackout in her building. She must survive a killer while communicating with Claire, voiced by Sadie Sink, and Ben, voiced by Troy Baker.
According to Night School Studio founder Sean Krankel, the game features around ten different ways to die, but players do not lose their progress after death.
«Every time you do die, the cops comment on the specifics of that crime scene», Krankel said.
The developer explained that the team decided not to create multiple endings, instead focusing on smartphone interactions and character relationships.
«It was more to feel very creepy and to really just lean into that», Krankel said about the game’s ending.
Netflix has given Unhinged an 18+ rating due to its violent content, but the developers wanted to avoid making it just another slasher.
«We didn’t want to go there to make it like Saw level, front to back, that level of stuff. But we did want you to feel really uncomfortable at times», Krankel said.
