Nintendo has officially unveiled an updated version of the original Nintendo Switch Joy Con controllers, introducing a small but meaningful hardware revision. Despite the redesign, the controllers will function the same as previous models.

Joy Con controllers have been a core part of the Nintendo Switch ecosystem since the console launched in 2017. Their compact size and detachable design helped define the system, while the newer Joy Con 2 later introduced a larger form factor and additional features such as mouse mode alongside new color options.

Nintendo has now confirmed that Joy Con controllers sold in Europe will feature Phillips screws instead of the previous Y-shaped screws. The revised models can be identified by a (-01) suffix in the model number.

According to Nintendo, the updated design will officially allow users to replace the controller's battery themselves. The company has also published a step by step battery replacement guide and plans to sell an official replacement kit that includes all the required tools.

«The changes were made to comply with EU battery regulations that will go into effect in February 2027»

Nintendo clarified that the redesign applies to the original Switch Joy Con, which remain compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.

The updated Neon Blue and Neon Red controllers became available through the European Nintendo Store on July 16. More color options will arrive later this year, although Nintendo has not announced a schedule. The battery replacement kit will be sold separately.

The announcement follows Nintendo's confirmation that the original Nintendo Switch family will be discontinued across Europe in March 2027 due to the upcoming battery regulations. At the same time, the Switch 2 remains compatible with most original Switch games and accessories, including the Joy Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Earlier this month, Nintendo also confirmed that Switch 2 consoles, Joy Con 2 controllers, and the Switch 2 Pro Controller sold in Europe will receive similar battery-friendly updates. The revised Switch 2 console is expected to launch in fall 2026, while the updated Joy Con 2 and Switch 2 Pro Controller are planned for winter 2026.

As a Reminder, GSC Game World opens new Closed Beta for Zone Kit narrative tools.
