The soundtrack of the original 1993 Doom game, composed by Bobby Prince, has officially been added to the National Recording Registry of the U.S. Library of Congress. The music became part of the “Class of 2026,” cementing its status as one of the most culturally significant works in video game history.
This year, Doom was selected as one of 25 recordings chosen from more than 3,000 public nominations. With this addition, the total number of titles in the registry has reached exactly 700.
In the 2026 list, the iconic game soundtrack appeared alongside famous hits and albums such as:
Bobby Prince, a lawyer and musician, created the soundtrack using MIDI technology. According to Engadget, he used his technical expertise to distribute in-game sound effects across different frequencies. This allowed the sounds to remain clear through the music despite the technical limitations of 1993 sound cards.
