Exactly 30 years ago, on June 22, 1996, Quake developed by id Software was released. The iconic shooter is now celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Following the groundbreaking impact of Doom in 1993, the new project became a major step forward in 3D technology. The Quake Engine introduced fully polygonal models and major technical improvements that influenced the entire industry and laid the foundation for future entries in the series.

The original Quake was a first person shooter with a dark atmosphere combining industrial and gothic environments. The story followed a soldier fighting hordes of enemies entering our world through dimensional portals.

Over time, the franchise expanded to include Quake, two Mission Pack expansions, Quake II, Quake III Arena, Quake 4, Enemy Territory Quake Wars, Quake Live, Quake Champions, as well as Quake Enhanced and Quake II Enhanced re releases.

In 1999, John Carmack released the Quake Engine source code under the GPL 2.0 license.

In 2021, the game received the Quake Enhanced edition with improved visuals and support for modern resolutions. Quake II RTX showcased real time ray tracing, while the Quake Ray Traced mod brings similar effects to the original game. NVIDIA also used the Quake III Arena RTX demo to demonstrate RTX Remix and path tracing for modernizing classic games.
