Japanese gaming giant Sega has announced major changes to its long term strategy. In its latest financial report, the company confirmed that it is shutting down the ambitious Super game initiative.

Originally unveiled in 2021, Super game was presented as a large scale effort to develop several AAA titles that would combine Sega’s decades of experience and technological expertise.

At the time, the company planned to invest around $882 million into the initiative and promised to deliver something that would “go beyond the boundaries of the gaming industry.” Sega has now officially canceled the project, although the company did not disclose how much money had already been spent on development.

Sega is also reconsidering its approach to free to play games. The publisher previously believed that such projects could help expand the audience of its existing franchises, but the performance of Sonic Rumble Party and similar titles reportedly fell short of expectations. As a result, Sega is moving away from this strategy, and more than 100 employees who worked on free to play games have already been reassigned to other teams.

At the same time, Sega confirmed that its “New Era” initiative announced in 2023 remains in active development. The company still plans to revive several classic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi, although no new details were shared.

Sega also remains silent about the sequel to the horror game Alien: Isolation, which recently received its first teaser trailer.

As a Reminder, New details about the development of Stellar Blade 2 have emerged.
