Sony has unexpectedly ended its partnership with Hideo Kojima on the spy stealth action game Physint. The project was first unveiled in 2024 by PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst.
Physint was envisioned as a spiritual successor to the Metal Gear franchise. According to Kojima, the project was intended to take another step toward “erasing the boundaries between games and movies”.
Sony did not explain why it decided to leave the project. The company only stated that it had worked with Kojima for more than 30 years, creating numerous high quality games together, and that their partnership would continue in the future. However, Physint is no longer part of their joint plans.
Kojima soon addressed the situation himself. He said that PlayStation Studios management had informed him back in June that the agreement surrounding Physint was being terminated.
However, that was not the end of Physint. The game has not been canceled and will now reportedly be funded and published by Xbox.
This means Kojima Productions is now working on two major projects for Microsoft. Alongside Physint, the studio continues development of the horror game OD, which has remained largely shrouded in mystery. The project is known to involve cloud technology and, like Physint, aims to “erase the boundaries between games and movies”.
Xbox head Asha Sharma also commented on the partnership with Kojima Productions, calling it “an important event for the company”.
Physint is most likely still in the early stages of development. If so, the game could very well become one of the titles planned for the next generation of Xbox consoles.
