Sony patents AI system that could dynamically change NPC behavior during gameplay

Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to patent unusual technologies for games. After a system that could potentially turn the DualSense controller into a payment terminal for PS Store purchases, the company has now patented another interesting concept. Patentlyze spotted a patent describing the use of artificial intelligence to dynamically alter NPC behavior while a game is being played.

How the system could work

According to the patent, the gaming device first collects data about how a player behaves during battles with enemies. This information is then turned into input data for a machine learning model, which generates content for a non-player character.

The resulting data could be used to alter an NPC's behavior, dialogue and appearance, as well as adjust how the character behaves during combat.

Sony does not specify a particular model architecture, meaning the technology could potentially work with different AI solutions. This could also allow third-party developers to use the system rather than limiting it to PlayStation's internal studios.

AI could make souls-like games even more unpredictable

In traditional single-player games, enemies usually rely on predefined behavior patterns. Once players learn these patterns, they can use that knowledge to make encounters easier.

Real-time AI adaptation could allow enemies to react to a player's preferred playstyle. For example, an opponent could change its strategy depending on whether the player is being aggressive or defensive.

In multi-phase boss fights, an enemy could potentially enter a stronger second phase earlier if the player puts heavy pressure on it. Patentlyze compares the concept to comeback mechanics found in modern fighting games, such as V-System in Street Fighter V and Critical Arts in Street Fighter 6.

At the same time, such technology would require careful balancing to prevent adaptive enemies from making games excessively difficult. Instead of simply giving enemies more health or damage, the system could potentially create a deeper and more balanced challenge.

Some developers have already experimented with similar concepts at the game-system level. For example, in Metal Gear Solid V, soldiers could start wearing helmets more often if the player frequently scored headshots. They could also call for armored vehicles after repeatedly encountering grenade launcher attacks or mines.

As with any patent, however, Sony's concept may never be implemented in an actual game. Still, the idea of NPCs dynamically adapting to a player's actions in real time is certainly intriguing.
