Sony Pictures has emerged as the frontrunner to secure the rights to adapt Electronic Arts’ Battlefield franchise for the big screen. According to TheWrap, the studio is currently in talks over the deal following a major bidding war involving several of Hollywood’s biggest companies.
Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal, Netflix and Apple Studios were among the companies competing for the project. Sony Pictures is now reportedly leading the race to turn the military shooter franchise into a major Hollywood event film.
Christopher McQuarrie is attached to write, direct and produce the adaptation. He is best known for his work on the latest Mission: Impossible movies and Top Gun: Maverick.
Michael B. Jordan is also attached to the project as a producer and is potentially set to star. The Oscar winner, who recently appeared in Sinners, is joined by producers Jesse Stern from Electronic Arts, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society.
The Battlefield series began with Battlefield 1942, which launched for PC and Mac in 2002. Since then, the franchise has expanded across consoles and explored conflicts ranging from Vietnam to futuristic wars. Last year’s Battlefield 6 became the best-selling game of 2025 and the biggest-selling entry in the entire franchise.
Battlefield 6 also achieved a major milestone in the United States by outselling Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in annual domestic sales. It was the first time an EA shooter had beaten Activision’s Call of Duty in yearly U.S. sales.
That commercial success reportedly gave Electronic Arts the momentum to take Battlefield to Hollywood. The movie package entered the market in early 2026, quickly attracting interest from major studios looking to capitalize on the growing popularity of video game adaptations.
The Battlefield movie could also face competition from another major game adaptation. Paramount is preparing a feature film based on rival franchise Call of Duty, with Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg attached to write the script, while Berg is also set to direct.
A representative for Sony Pictures declined TheWrap’s request for comment.
