Many are wondering whether Valve is preparing a new generation of its handheld console, the Steam Deck, which effectively set the trend and shaped the market for compact yet powerful gaming devices.

Back in fall 2025, Valve senior engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais noted that «the time for Steam Deck 2 has not yet come», explaining this by the lack of a chip capable of delivering a meaningful performance boost.
Now the situation appears to have changed. In an interview with IGN, he confirmed for the first time that the company is already working on Steam Deck 2.

No specific details were shared, but the engineer emphasized that Valve is taking a responsible approach and is building on the experience gained from developing its previous hardware.
«We are working hard on it. If you look at our devices over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck and everything we announced this year. And I am confident that Steam Deck 2 will follow the same path — what we are doing now will become a lesson for building new hardware», — said Pierre-Loup Griffais.
