Shortly after the premiere of HBO’s The Last of Us, there were reports suggesting the series could run for four seasons. Showrunner Craig Mazin previously argued that the storyline of the second game was too expansive to be properly adapted within just two seasons. However, it now appears that the network’s plans may have shifted.

HBO head Casey Bloys told Deadline that the third season of the adaptation could end up being the final one.

When directly asked about the show’s conclusion, Bloys replied: «It certainly seems that way». At the same time, he stressed that HBO relies on the showrunners regarding such decisions, adding that it would be «better to ask them».

Ending the series with season three would make sense, as the second season already faced some criticism over its writing and direction. Additionally, after its premiere, The Last of Us creator and co showrunner Neil Druckmann announced that he would no longer be involved with the show and would fully return to his duties at Naughty Dog.

The third season of The Last of Us is set to premiere on April 13 on HBO Max.
