Valve Begins Actively Optimizing CS2: Noticeable Improvements to the Source 2 Engine

Following the latest CS2 update, it has become clear that Valve has seriously turned its attention to optimizing the game. Most of the improvements are not minor tweaks, but deep changes within the Source 2 engine — many of them originating from work done during the development of Deadlock.

An analysis of recent DLL changes shows that optimization efforts have affected core game systems, including networking, animation, entity handling, and rendering. Some of these improvements are already having a tangible impact on CS2’s stability and overall smoothness.

Key improvements include:

  • more efficient parallel execution of server and client ticks;
  • a stronger type system and improved code generation;
  • more reliable networking with fewer desynchronization issues;
  • better handling of game entities and resources.

These changes represent only part of a broader optimization effort that is being gradually rolled out. Future updates are expected to make these improvements even more noticeable — particularly for players on lower-end systems and in competitive environments.

Reminder: NAF will miss IEM Kraków and will be replaced by Krimbo.
